17 Artists that Call Upon Your Inner Muse

"The spirit of her invincible heart guided her through the shadows." - Gabriel Garcia Marquez

As humans we ARE nature - one of its keenest rulers. There are trends in magical realist art, often showing women as connecting with the forces of the universe and thereby possessing magic abilities. There is something comforting and deeply stimulating with the supernatural abilities humans are portrayed possessing as seen in the below artworks.

Magic realism is when mythical/magical characters, objects or behaviors are placed in a realistic setting. We should quickly distinguish between magical realism and surrealism. Surrealism is usually when the whole outfit makes no sense, think Alice in Wonderland. With magical realism, you have a real life character but with butterflies trailing behind him/her. It's a touch of fantasy, a breath of magic.

Magic realism is the genre that spun out of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's 100 Years of Solitude, and the genre that enraptures the fans of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, among other contemporary fantastical films.

Magic realism was recently coined in the 1940's to identify the magical writings of Latin American writers:  Colombian Gabriel García Márquez , the Brazilian Jorge Amado , the Argentines Jorge Luis Borges and Julio Cortazar , and the Chilean Isabel Allende .

Abstract art aside, the only corollary in reality we find with fantasy is in our dream states and the beautiful, inner visuals of the deep and fascinating, sometime torturous imagination.

Freud would have a field day.
